Several short roles can reflect contracts, project work or career moves. You do not need to apologise for the number of entries. Make the relationship between the work, dates and employers easy to understand, then show what you contributed.
1. Keep the timeline honest
Use accurate dates for each role you list. Columbia recommends dates, ideally including months and years. A selective CV is not a full employment-history form, but selection must not become false continuity. Do not stretch a role to cover a gap or imply that separate jobs were one continuous job. Complete any form that asks for your full history.
2. Group assignments through the same agency
Indeed explains how assignments through one staffing agency can sit under that agency's name, with roles and dates beneath it. Label the work as temporary or contract. One or two temp roles can also stand alone. Unrelated employers can share a "Contract experience" section, but should remain separate entries rather than looking like one employer.
3. Use an optional summary to show direction
A short summary can connect your experience to the target role. Indeed suggests stating your relevant experience and what you want to do next. For example: "Customer support specialist with five years across retail and service teams, seeking a team-lead role." This is a fictional example, not a phrase to copy without checking your own facts.
4. Give concrete evidence, then prepare an answer
Use bullets to show a task, project or result you can explain. A useful contribution from a short contract is stronger than a vague list of qualities. Quantify only when you have a reliable figure. If asked why roles were short, give a calm factual answer. Contract completion, restructuring and career moves are different situations; do not substitute one for another.
Frequently asked questions
Should I omit a very short role?
Sometimes, if it is irrelevant to the application. Sources differ on including every temporary role. Keep the dates of listed roles accurate and supply full history when a form asks for it.
What about gaps between jobs?
Do not stretch employment dates. A brief factual note can help where needed, without private details. See our separate guide to employment gaps.
Should I put skills before experience?
That is one option. A hybrid can place relevant skills and a short summary first, with dated experience below. Keep employers, roles and the timeline clear regardless of section order.
