Freelance projects and side gigs show self-discipline, versatility, and delivery. An article from The Muse, republished by Boston University's career center, explains that this experience can strengthen a CV - when it is presented thoughtfully. The keyword is relevant.
Watch the short video: Should freelance work go on your CV?
1. When to include it
Include freelance work when it relates to the job you want, when it proves a measurable result, or when it fills a gap between employed roles - it shows you stayed active and productive. Leave it off when a project is unrelated to the role, or too old to reflect your current skills. A few relevant projects beat a long list of everything you have ever taken on.
2. Give it a real title and dates
Use a descriptive title such as "Freelance Graphic Designer" rather than a vague label like "Self-Employed", and add dates as you would for any job. If you have only a few projects, list them inside your normal experience section. If freelancing is a big part of your career, give it its own section. Indeed suggests keeping an updated list of your projects and pulling the most relevant ones into each application.
3. Group projects, show results
Many small gigs can be grouped under one heading with bullets. For each, briefly describe the scope, the problem you solved, and the result - and quantify where you can, since numbers make the work concrete. Mention clients or industries when you are free to name them; otherwise describe the type of client.
4. Keep it relevant and current
- Tailor the selection to each advert, mirroring the skills the employer asks for.
- Drop projects that no longer reflect what you can do today.

Frequently asked questions
Should I name my clients?
Name them when you are allowed to. If a project is confidential, describe the industry and the type of work instead.
Can freelance work cover an employment gap?
Yes. It shows you stayed active and kept building skills during the period.
Should I write "freelance" or "self-employed"?
"Freelance" is the clearer term for most recruiters. "Self-employed" fits better if you ran your own business over a long period.
