Before anyone reads your CV or resume, they see its file name in an email, an upload box or a folder. A clear name is a small sign of care. A messy one, like final-CV-NEW(2).pdf, tells the wrong story. This guide shows a simple pattern that works whichever word you use for the document.

1. Why the file name matters

Recruiters often download many files into one folder. If every file is called "CV" or "resume", yours is hard to find again. A name with your own name in it is easy to search, easy to sort and easy to forward to a colleague.

2. The simple pattern

Use this shape: First-Last-CV.pdf. Your name comes first because that is what a recruiter will search for later. If you like, add the role you are applying for at the end, for example First-Last-CV-Receptionist.pdf.

  • Use your real first and last name.
  • Separate words with hyphens or underscores, not spaces.
  • Keep it short enough to read in an email attachment list.
  • Save the final version as a PDF unless the advert asks for another format.

3. What to avoid

  • Version words such as "final", "new", "latest" or "v3".
  • Copy markers such as "(2)" or "copy".
  • Generic names like "CV" or "resume" with nothing else.
  • Special characters and very long names, which some upload forms reject.

4. Examples you can copy

The name above is invented for illustration. Keep your master file under a simple name, and add the role only on the copy you send. Our guide to keeping one master CV shows that habit, and the CV formatting and PDF export checklist covers the rest of the file itself.

Frequently asked questions

Should the file say CV or resume?

Use the word the employer uses in the advert. If there is no hint, either works. The important part is your name.

Should I add the year or the company name?

Not required. Your name plus, if you want, the role is enough. A company name means renaming the file for each application and it is easy to send the wrong one.

Is PDF always the right format?

For most applications, yes, because the layout stays the same on every device. If the advert asks for another format, follow the advert.
