Study can be relevant even without a completed degree. Your entry needs to tell the reader what you studied and whether you are still working toward the qualification, not leave them to infer graduation.
1. Decide whether the study helps
Coursera describes relevant coursework and partial study as possible education content, especially early in a career. Choose the parts that support the job: subject knowledge, a course or a project you can explain. Partial study does not replace a completed degree, licence or other qualification required by the role.
2. Still studying? Mark it in progress
Name the institution and program, and clearly state that it is in progress. Add an expected completion date only when you genuinely anticipate it; do not guess a year to fill a field. Coursera gives an anticipated graduation date as part of an in-progress entry. If the timing is uncertain, keep the status clear and follow any application-form instructions.
3. Left the program? Make non-completion clear
List the institution, subject and years attended, with wording that does not imply an award: studies toward the program, degree not awarded, or another equally clear description. Coursera notes that credits earned can help, but use only verified credits and the correct system. Years attended are not proof that every year or credit was completed. Relevant coursework can be listed as coursework, not as a degree.
4. Give it only the space it earns
An older period of partial study may need one line or none when stronger, relevant experience carries the application. TopCV stresses clear presentation of the status. On a CV, you usually do not need private details about why you left. If an application asks directly about attendance, completion or required qualifications, answer fully and accurately. Optional CV editing is not permission to leave a mandatory answer incomplete.
5. Keep program and credential separate
You can name a degree program while making clear that it is in progress or was not completed. What you must not do is present its title or a graduation date as an earned qualification. Employers may check attendance and awards; practices vary by country and employer. Keep the CV and application answers consistent, and do not claim that honest wording guarantees a successful check or an interview.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave partial study off my CV?
Often, if it is not useful and no instruction requires it. A separate application form may require your education history or completion status, which you must answer accurately.
Should I explain why I left?
Usually not on the CV. Clear dates and status are often enough. Follow any specific application questions without sharing unnecessary personal details.
What if I am unsure when I will finish?
Mark the program in progress only if that is true. Do not invent an expected date. Follow the form instructions if it requires more information.
