Most people comparing CV builders look at templates first and ask two questions last: what does the free tier actually give me, and what happens when I press download? This page answers those questions for five well-known tools - Zety, Resume.io, Novorésumé, FlowCV and Canva - and for our own builder. Every fact below comes from the tool's own pricing or product page, checked on 14 October 2026, with sources listed at the end. Prices and plans change, so treat this as a snapshot and follow the links before you decide.

We have tried to be fair: each of these tools does things CVPebble does not, and we say so. If you spot something out of date, the contact page reaches a human.

Zety

Zety's free Basic package lets you build a resume and download it in TXT format only; PDF and Word downloads are part of the paid Pro package. Pro starts with a 14-day trial for $1.95, then auto-renews at $25.95 billed every four weeks, and an annual package costs $71.40 paid at once. The free tier also includes a resume check and job-matching tools, and Zety offers a cover letter builder and more than 18 templates.

Resume.io

Resume.io offers a 7-day trial with full access to its resume tools, templates, cover letters and all download formats. If you do not cancel within the seven days, you are automatically subscribed to the premium monthly membership. There is a 7-day money-back guarantee on purchases. Like Zety, it includes a matching cover letter builder.

Novorésumé

Novorésumé's free Basic account covers a single resume version with a maximum of one page, predefined layouts, three fonts and no cover letter. Documents that use Premium features cannot be downloaded on the Basic account. Unusually, Premium is a one-time payment rather than a subscription: $21.99 for a month, $39.99 for a quarter or $139.99 for a year, with no automatic renewal.

FlowCV

FlowCV's free plan is the most generous of the five on paper: unlimited PDF downloads with no watermarks or branding, access to all templates and full layout control, for one resume, with no credit card required. The Pro plan at $5 per month adds more resume versions and cover letters, and if you downgrade, your first resume stays editable and downloadable.

Canva

Canva's resume builder is part of its wider free design platform, with thousands of templates and downloads in several formats. It is the most design-flexible option here, which cuts both ways: a CV heavy on graphics can be harder for applicant tracking systems to read, and the sheer range means more time spent choosing. Canva also sells Pro, Business and Enterprise plans alongside its free tier.

Where all five work the same way

Each of these tools keeps your CV in an online account. Their own pages describe saving your information in your account, managing your plan from the app, or signing up before you start. That is normal for a full editor - it is how your work survives between visits - but it means your name, work history and contact details sit on someone else's servers, under someone else's privacy policy.

How CVPebble compares

  • No account: the builder runs in your browser and your text is not uploaded to a server, so there is nothing to store, share or delete later.
  • Everything is free: unlimited PDF and Word downloads, no watermark, no trial that converts into a subscription, no card asked at any point.
  • What we do not offer: far fewer templates than Canva or Zety, no cover letter builder, no job matching, no design canvas. CVPebble is deliberately narrow: a small set of recruiter-readable layouts, a guided editor and writing guides.

If you want maximum design choice, Canva or Zety will serve you better. If you want a straightforward CV file without an account or a paywall, that is exactly the gap CVPebble was built for. Our five checks before trusting a free CV builder apply the same thinking to any tool you try, and the builder itself is one click away.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these builders is completely free?

FlowCV's free plan covers unlimited watermark-free PDF downloads for one resume, and CVPebble is free without limits or an account. The others gate some part of the download behind a paid plan or trial. "Free" always describes a tier, not the whole product, so check what the free file includes before you invest an evening.

Do I have to create an account to make a CV online?

On most platforms, yes: an account is how they save your work between visits. CVPebble is the exception here - the builder runs in your browser and needs no sign-up, at the cost of not syncing your CV across devices.

Is it risky to start a CV builder trial?

Only if you forget it exists. Both Zety and Resume.io state on their pricing pages that a trial converts automatically into a paid membership. If you try one, set a cancellation reminder the day you sign up, and check the renewal price, not just the trial price.

Does a better-looking template win more interviews?

There is no solid evidence for that. Recruiters read content: titles, dates and evidence of results. A clean, readable layout helps them find it; an elaborate one cannot substitute for it. Pick the simplest tool that produces a tidy file, then spend your time on the words.
